Masters in Industrial Engineering

The Masters in Industrial Engineering program aims to form professionals with high standards that contribute to the advancement of science, technology and teaching, as well as the design and application of models that allow the improvement of competitiveness of the industrial systems and the solution of the problems of the region. The Masters in Industrial Engineering intentions are to develop professionals capable of analyzing and investigating industrial systems, as well as designing, directing and improving the production systems within an organization using the different tools from industrial engineering responding to the needs of the industry effectively and contributing to the technological and social development of the region.
Specialization in Routes and Transports
Transport is one of the most important aspects for the development of a region. Nevertheless, the transport infrastructure, specially the road network of Colombia and specifically of the Atlantic Coast, has become an obstacle and not a facilitator of the development given its precarious state. The economic opening has found in the unsuitable infrastructure of transports - highways without the required specifications or in a poor state, an insufficient and technologically slow railway network, a fluvial network taken very little advantage of, insufficient ports - a handicap for the fulfillment of the goals drawn up when implementing that economic model.
It is imperative to prepare suitable professionals that contribute in the development of the system and the infrastructure of transport of the region. Universidad del Norte, in agreement with the objectives of its strategic plan, offers opportunities for the optimization of Human Resources as an indispensable element for the development of the Atlantic Coast and the country, and recognizing the preponderant importance of the transport, offers a program of Specialization in Engineering of Routes and Transports, whose main objective is to form engineers who are specialists in Routes and Transports. These engineers are highly enabled to participate actively in the planning, design, construction and operation of road projects and transport.
Specialization Electrical Energy Transmission Systems
A strong, reliable and developed electrical system is an indicator of the degree of technological advances of a country. The Colombian electrical system has fortified in many aspects, but mostly in transmission, where international interconnection works have been made.
Also the demand of the country has shown a stable growth in the past years, but in the electrical generation sector, a slight stagnation is observed that present a problem in future near. These special conditions demand a specialized electrical engineering professional, with ample and deep knowledge in these areas that will guarantee the growth of the national GIP, maintaining the regional and national electrical systems in operation in a reliable, safe and economic way.
The Specialization Electrical Energy Transmission Systems has as an objective to enable the professional in electrical engineering technologies and techniques for its performance in the consultancy and administrative management in the private and public institutions of the power sector.
Specialization Telecommunications Systems

Specialization in Computers Networks
Before the necessity of the organizations to interchange information in an agile and safe way, computers networks have become the most useful and effective technology to benefit the market with great handling of data for their operation. Conscious of this reality, the Engineering Division of Universidad del Norte has designed the program of Specialization in Computers Networks to prepare professionals highly enabled with knowledge and practices in this area, therefore aiding in the progress of the city and the region. The specialization offers advanced studies in computers networks to form a suitable specialist that actively participates in the technical-directive aspects in this important area of organizations and who will lead in the execution of projects that involve this technology.

The reality that present companies of our media have to face makes it necessary for there to be a superior performance as a requirement to be able to compete satisfactorily in the different markets of goods and services. The increasing complexity of the conditions of the market and incremental competitive pressure that the companies in the scope of its operations have had to face, sustained in the extension towards global markets, decreasing response times, the explosion in the demand on customer service and the reduced life cycle of products, among others, entails to an out of proportion growth of costs of service that is provided in relation to the quality which is perceived by the client.

Universidad del Norte created the Program "Specialization in Management of Engineering Projects" as an answer to the necessity to form highly qualified professionals for planning, evaluation, direction and control of Engineering projects, within a changing economic and political environment that raises new challenges and demands. Its objective is to fortify the preparation of the engineers and professionals interested in the techniques of Planning, Preparation and Control of private and public projects, in such a way that this is translated to a contribution of the best performances of these professional resources towards solutions that solve problems or satisfy necessities that could have a significant impact in the enterprise and social development of the Region and the Country.
Specialization in Industrial Electronics
The technological advances created through electronics, computational mechanics and systems that help in making the conducting of an operation and the control more agile and efficient of the production in the industry, have been the answer that to the necessity of cost reduction and the increase in productivity.
A high percentage of the industrial companies of our region are automated, they depend on competent Electrical and Electronic engineers, but with some insolvencies in knowledge on automatization and interfaces used in the processes of the areas where they work.

Specialization in Design and Project Evaluation
The necessary foundations for the execution of a successful project rest in the previous stages: preparation, formulation and evaluation. This is why, nowadays, it is indispensable that all professionals who evolve in the different areas of knowledge understand the techniques which will allow them to see the market, technique, financial, economic, social, and environmental viability of a project and to compare the cost relation and benefits of alternating investments.
Although in the past the tendency was to evaluate macro projects and these typically focused on the production of industrial goods of consumption. Universidad del Norte is conscious of the previous and because of the deficiency of a specialists in this field in the Colombian North region, has decided to create the specialization in Direction of Industrial Plants to satisfy the requirements that in this sense the companies of the region demand.
The Specialization in Direction of Industrial Plants sets out to develop the function of operations with an integrated and integral approach, depending upon strategic, tactical and operative decision levels clearly related and coordinated. Also, to look for an adapted balance between the long term (strategic level) and those related to the medium and short term (tactical and operative levels).
Specialization in Environmental Analysis and Management
Every day the necessity to analyze how humans relate with their environment it becomes clearer, the need to solve problems that arise when their actions affect the ecosystems and the survival of our biological diversity.
The preparation of the future professional in Environmental Analysis and Management has become a high-priority since solutions to problems of communities, enterprise decisions and of social development of a region are closely bound to the ecosystem. By not having integrated the environmental concept into their professional management could cause critical environmental impacts, affecting our natural habitat and endangering our quality of life, the ecological balance, our financial state, the productivity of a company, and the right to a healthy atmosphere for future generations.

Universidad del Norte, offers the Specialization in Structure Analysis and Design. This specialization prepares professionals of engineering with specialized knowledge and updated for analysis of structures, diagnoses of its pathologies and their design. They should be someone who can be able to find solutions to the necessities of the surroundings.
Specialization in Quality Management
Universidad del Norte, through its Engineering Division, and in agreement with ICONTEC, present the city of Barranquilla the Specialization in Quality Management program, with the aim of forming directors who will manage operations under the principles and methodologies of the Total Quality philosophy. This program was conceived from the need of the sector for qualified personnel that could ideally expose the principles, tools and fundamentals of Integral Quality Management, norms ISO 9000 and ISO 14000, as well as the management and improvement of the productive processes in goods and/or services.
The specialization develops management competences and abilities in professionals within the surroundings of quality systems.
