Abstract: The present study investigated the use of sludge ash from water treatment plants as supplementary cementing material, elaborating hydraulic mortars with different levels of cement replacement by sludge ash (10 wt% and 30 wt%) and different temperatures of calcination (600 °C and 800 °C). Characterization of sludge ash and mortars includes XRF, XRD, particle size distribution by laser diffraction, compressive strength, and SEM-EDS. The results show that SiO2, Al2O3, and Fe2O3 compose 90 % of the sludge ash, and it has potential pozzolanic activity. It is evidenced that there is a significant influence of the variable ratio of sludge ash:cement in the compressive strength of the mortar cubes over other variables. Overall, this study showed that the sludge ash could be considered as a viable and sustainable alternative for the construction sector. Despite the benefits of the suggested replacement, the presence of amorphous SiO2 requires a review of long-time chemical behavior..

Abstract: The genetic algorithm (GA) model presented here provides specific JONSWAP parameters that can be used for wave modelling. This work describes a validated heuristic model based on GA, to select JONSWAP spectra parameters, regardless of water depth restrictions and sea state conditions. The identification of the JONSWAP spectra parameters is difficult, as the alpha and gamma coefficients have scattered distributions that modulate the spectral peak energy. In addition, the selection of alpha and gamma coefficients from in situ free surface records may be difficult and time-consuming, because of the amount of data and nonlinearities involved. The proposed model uses either in situ or numerically modelled wave data and has three main steps: (1) generation and crossover, (2) minimisation of the cost function ΔHs, defined as the minimum difference between the calculated artificial significant wave height and the in situ wave height (instrumented or modelled), and (3) mutation and natural selection. To apply the model, in situ wave data measured by an acoustic Doppler current profiler over 5.5 months was used in this research. The results show a high correlation (r^2), of 0.95, between the best fitted curves of modelled spectra and measured data.

Abstract: The high potential of wind speed in the Colombian Caribbean coast is an opportunity to develop offshore wind energy technology. This article contains the wind speed and wind power density in four strategic locations in Colombia (Cartagena, Barranquilla, Santa Marta and La Guajira) at different elevations. The dataset from this study is related to the research paper “Renewables energies in Colombia and the opportunity for the offshore wind technology published in Journal of Cleaner Production (Rueda-Bayona et al.) [1]. Reading and processing numerous files stored in databases could be challenging because it demands software programming to do so, what could difficult the access to valuable data for the community. Also, high compressed files such as NetCDF formats demand specialised software which is not easy obtaining and utilising because it requires skills in a programming language. Then, this study used the NARR-NOAA database [2] and generated local wind and power density data stored in Excel sheets to ease their utilisation.

Abstract: This article contains the set-up and input files of the implementation of Delft3D model to determine extreme hydrodynamic forces performed in Rueda-Bayona et al. [1]. The model was configured with a multidomain grid using double-way communication between the hydrodynamic and wave module. The multidomain grids solve faster than single and nested grids because require less grid points to calculate. Also, the double-way communication between the hydrodynamic and wave modules allows to consider the non-linear interactions of wind, waves, tides and currents. Because there are no modelling examples related to multidomain grids in the open access official web site of Delft3d model, this data contributes to increase the availability information of this necessity. Finally, the files of this article are ready to be run in the Delft3D model to perform a sensitivity test recommended in Rueda-Bayona et al. [1].

Abstract: Human activity, mainly associated with the construction of coastal infrastructure, has caused ecological degradation to the coastal zone at Puerto Colombia, Colombia. Severe erosion attacked the ancient sandy spit that protected the municipality from wave energy to an extent that it completely disappeared. The groins constructed thereafter, with the aim of protecting the coast, have exacerbated the sediment imbalance, affecting the Balboa coastal wetland. At present, the coastline around Puerto Colombia is highly vulnerable; the remaining ecosystems are under severe pressure, and the population is at risk. Restoring the marine and terrestrial connectivity is key to improving this situation.
