Mission Statement
The Civil Engineering Program of the Universidad del Norte regards as its mission the comprehensive education of civil engineers characterized by behaving ethically, with a strong sense of professional and social responsibility, by making rational, efficient and sustainable use of the resources available to them.
This comprehensive education is supported by a curriculum that furthers a technical humanistic education, with a pronounced environmental awareness, as well as by the stimulus to the student participation in extramural and research activities that complement their education.
The education provided to students is a basic and essential one that allows them properly performing as civil engineers, and also undertaking postgraduate studies in any of the areas of the profession.
The Civil Engineering Program is committed to Quality Education, a goal that involves all the members of the educational community. The program seeks to strengthen research in the various performance areas of Civil Engineering, and the commitment of professors and students to the social development of our region and country.
Program Educational Objectives
1. Demonstrate succesful performance in the Civil Engineering profession.
2. Pursue advanced studies in terms of graduate programs, professional certificates, and short courses to adapt to the needs and requirements of contemporary development of the Civil Engineering profession.
Student Outcomes
Graduates are expetected to be able to demonstrate:
a. An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering;
b. An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data;
c. An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability;
d. An ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams;
e. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems;
f. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility;
g. An ability to communicate effectively;
h. The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context;
i. A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning;
j. A knowledge of contemporary issues; and
k. An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
