To progressively develop students’ communicative competence in Spanish so that they can understand, interact, and express themselves orally and in writing with increasing autonomy, fluency, accuracy, and appropriateness in personal, social, academic, and professional contexts.

Upon completing the advanced levels, students will be able to understand complex spoken and written texts, present and defend arguments on a wide range of topics, produce clear and well-structured texts, and act as linguistic and intercultural mediators.

The courses integrate language and culture through current foreign-language teaching methodologies.

Classes provide regular exposure to authentic spoken and written texts and encourage the use of Spanish in meaningful, real-life situations. Activities are completed individually, in pairs, and in groups to maximize opportunities for interaction.

Students participate in practical tasks designed to develop comprehension, production, interaction, and mediation skills. Course content may be adjusted according to the needs, characteristics, and interests of each group.

The program is organized according to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

A1 – Beginner

• Personal introductions, greetings, and basic personal information
• Family, routines, leisure activities, and everyday experiences
• Food, places, transportation, and shopping
• Basic expressions used to meet immediate needs
• Basic vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation
• Introduction to intercultural aspects of Colombian Spanish

A2 – Elementary

• Introducing and describing people and situations
• Expressing likes and preferences
• Asking for and giving advice
• Talking about past experiences
• Communicating in familiar and predictable situations
• Producing simple spoken and written messages related to family, work, and living conditions

B1 – Intermediate

• Understanding the main ideas and relevant details of spoken and written texts
• Describing experiences, events, wishes, and plans
• Giving detailed instructions and finding one’s way in different environments
• Explaining simple processes and how everyday devices work
• Talking about future actions, conditions, and hypotheses
• Producing clear, organized, and cohesive texts on general or personally relevant topics

B2 – Upper-Intermediate

• Understanding extended texts and discourse on concrete and abstract topics
• Interacting fluently with native speakers and other users of the language
• Expressing and supporting opinions
• Evaluating different options
• Expressing conditions, beliefs, and feelings
• Describing and evaluating cities, spaces, and environments
• Using linguistic resources that support precise and natural communication

C1 – Advanced

• Understanding extended and complex spoken and written texts
• Using Spanish flexibly and effectively in social, academic, and professional contexts
• Narrating with different communicative purposes
• Producing comparative, narrative, and argumentative texts
• Organizing and connecting ideas in complex texts
• Using the indicative and subjunctive at an advanced level
• Expressing and defending viewpoints through arguments, examples, and appropriate conclusions

C2 – Proficiency

• Understanding virtually any type of spoken or written message, including speech delivered at a natural pace
• Participating in conversations on personal, social, and professional topics
• Presenting complex topics and adapting them to different audiences
• Producing clear, fluent texts appropriate to different purposes, formats, and readers
• Expressing opinions, evaluations, emotions, doubts, and subtle shades of meaning
• Using advanced word-formation processes, the subjunctive, and reported speech
• Mediating linguistically and interculturally between native and non-native speakers
• Adapting language to the interlocutors and the communicative context

At the end of each level, students receive a final numerical grade.

The assessment process takes into account:

• Academic performance throughout the course
• Participation in individual and group activities
• Development of comprehension, production, interaction, and mediation skills
• Completion of assignments established by the instructor
• Attendance at a minimum of 80% of class sessions

Each level consists of 64 instructional hours and is completed over one academic semester.

Tuition per level: COP $3,600,000.

Once admitted, students will receive information by email regarding the available payment methods and channels.

The program does not offer financing.

• A minimum of 4 students is required to open a group.
• The Language Institute at Universidad del Norte reserves the right to cancel or postpone the start of a course depending on enrollment numbers.
• The Institute may make changes to course content or teaching staff when necessary.
• No partial or full refunds will be issued to students who withdraw after the course has begun or who fail to meet the certification requirements.
• Enrollment may not be transferred or deferred to a future course offering.
